Iamisigo SS27: An Archive in Motion

At Copenhagen Fashion Week, Lagos-, Nairobi-, and Accra-rooted design house Iamisigo presented a collection that treats fashion as a living archive — one where traditional craftsmanship, cultural memory, and contemporary expression meet.

Founded on the preservation of Africa’s intangible cultural heritage, Iamisigo approaches clothing as more than a finished object. Each piece carries traces of the knowledge, techniques, and communities behind it. Handmade by African artisans, the collection draws on traditional weaving and craft practices, transforming ancestral methods into distinctly contemporary silhouettes.

The SS27 collection reflects the brand’s commitment to slow, conscious design. Natural fibres, upcycled textiles, brass, glass, and unconventional materials come together in tactile compositions that feel both raw and refined. Rather than reproducing historical references, Iamisigo reinterprets them, allowing heritage techniques to exist within a new visual language.

This tension between past and future is central to the brand’s identity. Textures become as important as silhouettes, while handmade surfaces and unexpected combinations give the garments an almost sculptural presence. The result is fashion that feels deeply connected to place and tradition, yet refuses to be confined by geography.

Iamisigo’s approach also challenges the idea of a single, fixed cultural identity. By bringing together influences from different regions and communities across the African continent, the house embraces hybridity and creative exchange. Its collections become a meeting point between histories — a reminder that cultural heritage is not static, but something that can evolve, travel, and be reimagined.

At Copenhagen Fashion Week, Iamisigo presented fashion as both craft and statement: clothing to be worn, but also to be remembered. SS27 is an invitation to look beyond the surface of fashion and recognise the stories, hands, and inherited knowledge woven into it.
