By Malene Birger SS27: A Return to Copenhagen, Guided by Light
For Spring Summer 2027, By Malene Birger returns to the official Copenhagen Fashion Week schedule for the first time in six years — a homecoming that reconnects the Danish house with the city and the heritage that have shaped its identity since its founding.
Presented at Friheden, an intimate private residence closely connected to the brand, the collection reflects a desire to look back while continuing to move forward. It is a return to Copenhagen, but not a nostalgic one. Instead, By Malene Birger approaches its heritage through an evolving contemporary perspective.
The inspiration for SS27 began in the depths of winter, with a longing for warmth and light. From this starting point, the collection explores the anticipation of summer — those sensations of sunlight and warmer days that exist first in memory and imagination. At its centre is the sun, serving both as a visual and emotional muse and as a metaphor for optimism, renewal and transition.
This idea of transition is particularly fitting for a house that has been continuously refining its identity. Founded in 2003 by Danish designer Malene Birger, the brand entered a new chapter in 2020 with a complete reimagining of its visual identity. Today, its aesthetic is rooted in sophisticated Scandinavian minimalism, elevated through refined fabrics, feminine details and enduring silhouettes.
The SS27 collection is shaped under the creative direction of Emilie Martinsen-Kønigsfeldt, working closely with Head of Design Sydney Roark. Roark, originally from California and educated in Italy, has been part of the By Malene Birger design team for five years. Together, they balance the house’s established codes with a fresh contemporary sensibility.
At its core, By Malene Birger SS27 appears to be about the quiet luxury of anticipation: the first warmth after winter, the rituals of summer and the feeling of standing between what has been and what is yet to come. In returning home to Copenhagen, the brand uses its past not as an anchor, but as a foundation for what comes next.
The By Malene Birger SS27 show took place on 4 August during Copenhagen Fashion Week.
